Icaridin Insect Repellent is relatively odorless, non-greasy, gentle on the skin and doesn’t damage synthetic clothing or outdoor gear. As effective as DEET
Most people are familiar with DEET, which has been around for over 50 years. DEET is effective and well-studied but is not a perfect product. It is a plasticizer – meaning that it can damage certain plastic, vinyl, rubber, eyeglasses and a number of synthetics. DEET also has a strong, distinct odor, can be greasy to apply and can sometimes cause skin irritation. Lastly, Health Canada recommends limits on its use in children.
Many studies have shown Icaridin to be as effective as DEET and, at a 20% concentration, works as well as or even better than DEET. It is suitable for adults and children as young as 6 months, making it a great choice for the whole family.
The World Health Organization (WHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Health Canada all recommend Icaridin as an effective alternative to DEET. According to The World Health Organization: “Due to its safety, effectiveness and cosmetic properties, Picaridin was their recommended product for repelling the mosquitos that carry Malaria.”
Icaridin (also known in the US as Picaridin) is the common name for Hydroxyethyl Isobutyl Piperidine Carboxylate. It is a synthetic replica of a natural compound found in pepper plants known as Piperine. It is an odourless and almost colourless liquid that, like DEET, blocks the insect’s olfactory receptors. In other words, the insect’s “nose” no-longer picks up on human sweat and breath, making it difficult to find you.
